岡山市政田地区の食習俗は,上南干拓による堀田の改修,上水道の設置等によって大きく変わった。それまでは,飯を漬物,汁,少々のおかずで食べる毎日だった。政田地区の生業は,農業(堀田のある地域とそれ以外の地域),漁業,商業(小売業)の大きく4つに分かれており,食習俗も幾分異なっている。飯(主食)は,農業(堀田地域) では麦が作れないので白飯,農業(堀田以外の地域)では麦飯,漁業,商業の家では米,麦を購入し,麦飯,おかずは,どの地域でも家の周りで四季折々にとれる野菜と堀田や四番川,汽水域でとれる魚や貝類を食べている。鰻や鮒,あかめ,いな,あさりやしじみが始終,食卓に上っていた。漁業の家ではやはり,魚を食べる回数が多い。また,ハレとケの食事の内容は違っていた。ハレの日はごちそうが並び,地域の人や親せきが集って食べ,普段は,自分の家で取れる野菜や豆,魚,そして近在から売りにくる食材を使って煮物や和え物,汁をこしらえ,一家そろって食べていた。いずれにしても共食である。\n
